October - November

Trip from Finike marina to Cavus bay, Tekirova, Phaselis and Cineviz bay.

Lovely to be out on the water again sailing up the coast. The first night we anchored in Cavus bay.

However, the thunderstorm we thought we were leaving behind came round the mountains and followed us - not the warm, sunny, blue skies we have been used to! First time the waterproofs have been out this year.

 Amazing skies after the storm.

Overnight anchorage in Tekirova bay - actually the site of the ancient southern harbour.

The next morning we rowed ashore and went to explore Phaselis - an ancient Lycian / Roman site dating back to 7th Century BC. This is the main avenue into the site with the agora (marketplace) on the left of the picture.

A beautiful old amphitheatre, fairly small in comparison to others we have seen but very atmospheric. It once held 2000 people.
Wonderful to wander round with so much to see that has been preserved but not rebuilt.

One of the many Roman baths where you can still see where the water was heated and run under the floor.

The old northern harbour and military harbour.

The Roman aquaduct which brought water from the hills outside the city which was then distributed through channels and water pipes.

Yes I know this looks like a picture of water but if you look really closely you can just see the flying fish. We saw lots on our way back down the coast but almost impossible to photograph!

Overnight anchorage in Cineviz - we had the bay to ourselves - just a fisherman's shack on shore. This picture is looking out of the bay and, at night with binoculars, we could just see the Chimera - an area where flames continually come out of the rocks. Either gases burning or the monster breathing fire. This was the creature that Bellerophon tried to kill when he rode on Pegasus and poured moulten lead into the creature's mouth. However, the creature was eternal so we still see the fire today (much more interesting than burning gas!!)

Evening light - another fabulous sky.

Antalya

ANOTHER DAY TRIP WITH FRANK & LIN

Frank & Lin in the main square in Antalya - statue and photo of Attaturk in the background. The town is getting ready for Republic Day celebrations the next day - 91 years since Attaturk created the country of Turkey. Every shop and office should have a copy of his photo on display.

Lunch in the garden in the old town above the bazaar.

Hadrian's Gate - named after the Roman Emperor who passed through the entrance when he visited the town in 130BC. It has been well restored and apparently the Queen of Sheba also came through here.

Detail of lion's head carving on part or the restored facade.

Rather rickety balconies in the old town.

Walking through the old town - typical Turkish carpet shops and borganvilia.

Drink stop before leaving - evening light across the bay from the old town.

October - Demre, Myra and Olympos

A DAY TRIP WITH FRANK AND LIN

We hired a car from Finike marina and went out to explore the surrounding area. Only 30 minutes along the coast was Demre - home of St Nicholas' church - the original Santa Claus. Apparently he was a very benevolent bishop in the town but didn't want everyone to know so he would climb up onto the roofs of the houses at night and drop gold coins down the chimneys. At one house, the daughters were drying their stockings by the fire and the gold landed in them. Thereby starting a tradition!

  Beautifully painted ceilings.....

......and mosaic floors.

A section of the restored church.

Going inland from Demre we soon came to Myra to see the huge amphitheatre and the mass of rock tombs.

Many examples of carved theatrical masks are to be seen around the outside.

Such clean, regular carving in the stone of egg and dart and lozenge designs.

An idea of scale of the site when you see the size of the people.

The rock tombs are just off to the left of this picture.

Lycian rock tombs to the side of the theatre - Temple-type and house-type tombs.

Looking down into the Roman theatre which could seat thousands.

We then drove back past Finike and went out to Olympos further north.
Here there are ruins from the 4th Century BC

Remains of the old town and castle

Detail on a sarcophagus showing the "Tree of Life".

September - October

Mari & Pete Join Us

Shopping in Kalkan

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Pete!!!

An early morning start, leaving Kalkan - Mari photographing the sunrise.

Kabak retreat - beautiful bay.

Looking back at the retreat from the boat. A real get away from it all spot for yoga and meditation. Wooden chalets amongst the trees surrounded by impressive mountains.

A new spot in Gemiler bay - clear water anchorage and the place almost to ourselves.

Back to Kastellorizon and a walk round to the main port.

The view as we walked back to the boat. An island dwelling ideal for renovation!!

At the top of the steps up to the rock tomb.

The carved facade of the rock tomb.

Inside that tiny waterside chapel seen in the blog when John was with us.

Morning reflections.
Another stop off in Karaloz on the way back to Finike.

September

Stopping off to fill up with fuel on the quay and the Alsatian takes your line and pulls the boat in! Problem is he then won't let go - the men at the fuel station had to threaten him with spray from the hosepipe before he would give up.

John protecting the foredeck from UV rays!

Anchored in Mandraki bay on Kastellorizon.

Oh dear! More patches to the poor old mainsail - it now has a total of 26! Maybe it's time to look at getting a new main!

Tiny chapel on the water's edge in Mandraki.

A lovely walk round to the main port of Kastellorizon - very colourful town.

A turtle just off the town quay looking for crabs in the wall.

Back to Mandraki via the castle on the headland. Serenity is anchored off St George's Island to the left of the picture.

John looking out from the castle across to Kas.

Back to Karaloz and a spot of watercolour painting.

The water really is turquoise here - looking out from the boat to the entrance of the bay - nicely tucked in round the corner.
