Island Hopping

In the Dodecanese

From Kos we headed north to Pserimos island and then on to Kalymnos

Kalymnos

Traditionally the sponge fishing centre of Greece, they still collect sponges here but most are now sold to tourists.Originally the sponge divers would jump overboard holding onto a stone slab to get them to the bottom where they would scoop the sponges into nets. A well paid job as it was so dangerous and many lost their lives.

Small beach hideaway near the harbour in Pothia.

Loofahs collected and drying in the sun.

One thirsty pigeon drinking straight from the tap - he obviously didn't fancy the muddy puddle that others were drinking from!

A two hour bus tour took 4 of us around the island with a local guide. This is looking down to the harbour from the monastery.

Another view from the monastery looking out to sea.

The church at the monastery built after St Savvas died.

St Savvas' house. Here we could see many items given to the saint as a thank you for his help in their lives. These included trophies, medals, bride's garlands, models of boats he had saved and even crutches from those able to walk again.

The view looking down to Telendhos island. With a lot of imagination you can see, in the profile of the island,  the shape of a beautiful princess who died of a broken heart!

The island is very popular with rock climbers and many world championship events are held here.

Back to Kos

We hired a car for the day and went exploring the island. This is looking from Kos across to Pserimos and Kalymnos in the distance.
You may wonder why I took this picture but if you zoom in you can see two men cleaning/painting this colossal cruise ship from a dinghy. I wouldn't want their job!
